Western Nebraska Bicycling Club's plans for a regional back-roads race are starting to take shape.
Member Matt Hutt and other club members are planning to invite up to 200 cyclists to take part in the inaugural "Robidoux Quick and Dirty, a ride that will take cyclists on some of Scotts Bluff Country's most scenic back roads in and near Wildcat Hills.
The race will offer prizes of up to $300 for men and women, but casual riders will also be allowed to "take your time and make it an adventure ride."
Riders will spend almost 30% of the ride on gravel, although a route mapped out for the event includes a portion of paved Stegall Road and Old Oregon Trail toad through Mitchell Pass. Riders will pedal through scenic Carter Canyon and ride on teh slopes of the Wildcat Hills south of Gering. The route involves 4,000 feet of elevation changes on the 75-mile course, which is shorter than most such races.
