Western Nebraska Community College invites panhandle artists and alumni to submit original artwork to be displayed in the 5th Annual Art Gallery Exhibit opening Thursday, Oct. 20 at the John N. Harms Center in Scottsbluff. Artists of all ages, including youth, are invited to submit artwork through Oct.10. The exhibit is part of WNCC's Homecoming activities and is open to the public as a Business After Hours in conjunction with the Scottsbluff/Gering United Chamber of Commerce on Oct. 20 from 5-7 p.m.
This year's show features miniature water towers that panhandle artists have created for a silent auction, the proceeds of which are shared between the artist and the WNCC Foundation. The community is invited to participate in creating a piece of public art during the Business After Hours on Oct. 20.
Because 2016 marks the 90th anniversary of WNCC, and in honor of this milestone, WNCC hopes to feature 90 artists from around the panhandle. In 2015, 53 artists were featured showcasing 160 pieces of art. Competition was fierce for top honors last year as the community had a wide range of pieces for which to cast a ballot. The People's Choice Award winner was "Platte Valley Spring," an oil by Letisha Smith of Morrill. There was a three-way tie for Honorable Mention, including "Mud Fight," a photograph by Randy Henry of Scottsbluff; "Left Behind," a photograph on leather by Steve Sullivan of Alliance; and "Fashion Monster," a mixed media collage by Martin Vargas.
"Several years ago, in one of several workshops hosted by WNCC for artists and entrepreneurs in support of National Entrepreneur Week USA, it was suggested that the Harms Center be a showcase for area artists," says Judy Amoo, John N. Harms Center Executive Director. "Thousands of people visit the WNCC campus each year, and this is an opportunity for WNCC to proudly recognize the breadth of artistic talent in our communities and to support the arts as well as the artists."
Those interested in having art considered for the exhibit may contact Judy Amoo at 308-635-6702 or amooj@wncc.edu. This is a non-juried show and there is no entry fee.
